Daring to Step into the Intersection: required ACTION in eLearningProfessor Ronald M Harden OBE MD FRCP (GLAS.) FRCS (ED.) FRCPC DescriptionThe boom in educational technology has not lived up to its promise of revolutionising medical education. When the aim is simply to provide access to technology, we are taking a technology centred approach with a hundred year history of failure. This presentation argues that eLearning has a particularly important role to play at a time when medical education is being widely re-examined and curricula being redefined. To respond to the developments in medical education we need ACTION in eLearning - Adaptive or personalised learning and assessment where the education is tailored to the needs of the individual student; a Continuum of learning with a progression from undergraduate through postgraduate to continuing professional development; Technology in eLearning driven by pedagogy rather than technology driving pedagogy; International or transnational programmes recognising globalisation in medicine; Outcome based learning where the emphasis is switched from process to product and where outcomes such as professionalism are recognised; and Networking or collaborative learning recognising the value of peer assisted and cooperative learning. For this to be achieved, however, requires the coming together of different disciplines including psychology, educational technology, instructional design, computing and medical education. The necessary progress in the future is likely to be made at the intersection of these disciplines.
